Minor League manager’s offices all filled

The Phillies rounded out the main pieces in their player development system with the announcement of minor league managers. Last week, Ryne Sandberg joined the fold to take over for Dave Huppert at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Another former Phillie, Mickey Morandini – can’t type that name without hearing Harry The K say it – will take over at Williamsport in the short-season New York-Penn League this season.

Roster moves protect five young players

The annual rite of deciding who is protected from the 40-man roster and who is not protected came to a head with five recent roster additions. The Phillies deemed Justin DeFratus, Freddy Galvis, Harold Garcia, Cesar Hernandez and Matt Rizzotti worthy of needing protection and added the five to the roster.

Sandberg takes the helm at Lehigh Valley

In a move that had been rumored for some time, the Phillies have hired Ryne Sandberg to replace Dave Huppert as manager at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Sandberg managed at Triple-A Iowa in the Cubs organization last season, leading them to an 82-62 record and picking up the Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year honor. After being passed over for the Cubs managerial job, Sandberg decided to leave the organization and look elsewhere for new opportunities. His search led him to the Phillies, the organization that he initially reached the majors with before being added as a throw-in to acquire Ivan DeJesus from the Cubs.

The Phillies will name the rest of Sandberg’s staff and a new manager and staff for Double-A Reading in the near future.

Pitcher Eddie Bonine chooses Phils over Tigers

The Phillies have signed former Tigers reliever Eddie Bonine to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Bonine, who was 4-1 with a 4.63 ERA in Detroit last season, was outrighted to Toledo by the Tigers and elected to take free agency rather than head back to the minors.

Sandberg could return to the organization

Ryne Sandberg, who at one point looked like a shoe-in to get the Cubs managerial job, could find his way back to the Phillies organization. Long-time fans will remember that Sandberg was a throw-in when the Phillies traded Larry Bowa to the Chicago Cubs to get Ivan DeJesus in return. That deal has long haunted Phillies fans, but they could get their chance to welcome Sandberg back to the organization in one of a couple scenarios.

More minor league baseball for Philly area?

With three teams – the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Reading Phillies and Lakewood BlueClaws – all playing in close proximity to the Philadelphia area, the Phillies have themselves set up well for both their front office members and fans to keep tabs on the Phillies of tomorrow. Now, the Phillies are looking to bring one of their remaining minor league clubs to the Philadelphia area as well.
