Lehigh Valley IronPigs’ catchers Paul Hoover and Dane Sardinha have been in an unofficial battle for a spot on the Phillies 40 man roster. Hoover has won the battle and will have his contract purchased by the Phillies on September 1. Hoover left Lehigh Valley to make the cross-country flight to join the team in Los Angeles.
Hoover spent almost two weeks with the Phillies in May when Brian Schneider was on the DL and hit .278 in six games. At Lehigh Valley this season, Hoover hit .247 in 77 games.
The Phillies will likely wait to make any further roster additions until they come off of their current road trip and may wait until the Double-A and Triple-A seasons end on Monday September 6. One exception would be to add a starting pitcher – most likely either Nate Robertson, who threw six shutout innings for Lehigh Valley on Tuesday night, or Drew Carpenter, who has been up with the Phillies on a couple different occasions.
